Yankee's Update

Sunday night, April 19 2009:

We are not going to talk about the happenings of the April 18 afternoon game. We are going to talk about how ALL of the work done over the off-season is totally paying off. CC, AJ, Tex, and most surprisingly of all, a certain Nick Swisher has proven to be a diamond in the rough. We are sitting right above .500, and given Wang's three horrendous starts, I am pretty happy with that record. We have a three more home games, the A's are coming to town (homecoming Giambi?) and then we are traveling up I95 to take on our arch nemisis: the Boston Douche Sox. Interesting, Wang is scheduled to start Friday, lets see what happenes.

as far as this season goes, we have some serious concerns regarding our bull pen...allegedly. if you ask me, i think they're just fine. we have a lot of good young arms. a few things: a) when you have a guy like damaso marte who is basically only in the bigs to take care of lefties, why is he pitching to right handed batters? phil coke, our other lefty, has been steady(ish), but he is more suited to get right and left handed hitters out because he doesn't rely as heavily on an offspeed pitch. in marte's case, a slider. b) ask anyone who knows me, but i swear that both brian bruney and dave robertson have big-league stuff. bruney got lumped his first go round, but he's since struck out something like 12 batters in less than 7 innings. impressive. dave robertson throws a nasty hook and has low to mid 90s heat. c) besides mo, i think that the most important element to our bull pen's success is edwar ramirez and jose veras because they're going to be, more often than not, sent out there to get our starters out of jams. ramirez's go to pitch is a change up and if he throws his fastball for strikes, he's almost un-hittable, and much like marte, i think veras'(even though he throws in the high 90s) slider is more important to his having a good year.

like you said, swisher is off to a surprisingly good start and you have to really like three switch-hitting sluggers in the middle of this line-up. and robi cano has been swinging the bat really well to start off the year. let's hope he doesn't play this season in reverse... come out of the gate strong and then fizzle out after the break.
