I don't want you to be without a greeting from me when Christmas comes and when you, in the midst of the holiday, are bearing your solitude more heavily than usual. But when you notice that it is vast, you should be happy; for what (you should ask yourself) would a solitude be that was not vast; there is only one solitude, and it is vast, heavy, difficult to bear,f sociability, however trivial or cheap, for the tiniest outward agreement with the first person who comes along, the most unworthy.... But perhaps these are the very hours during which solitude grows; for its growing is painful as the growing of boys and sad as the beginning of spring. But that must not confuse you. What is necessary, after all, is only this: solitude, vast inner solitude. ...

Something i want to know. Say back in the 1930s during the great depressions, we as a nation didn't hit rock bottom. Say in the 1950s 60s 70s we didn't hit rock bottom when we had white dudes blowing up churches with black kids in them. I thought that was America's rock bottom. When I started learning about history I was glad that the whole Rock Bottom Times were behind me and I had the most amazing future to look forward to. A future with flying cars, cool people passing awesome legislation in Congress. Man, imagine being a kid in the 90's with an imagination. Literally, everything was possible.

Now, after the swing of this vote, I fear that America's financial or social rock bottom is not behind us. I fear for this.

Thanks Boomers. You had the best, and gave us the worst. cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5877161086513671185.post-92206993943208278792010-10-29T23:20:00.002-04:002010-10-30T15:41:12.161-04:00Is the flat tax fair?I came up with this scenario today in response to this post I came across on a blog at the Cato Institute.

Question about flat taxes:

Person 1 earns 25,000 a year. Person 1 pays 500 dollars a month for rent, 200 for food, 200 for utility bills (phone, electricity, heating), 100 for bus pass/train pass, for a total basic expenditure of 1000 per month. A flat tax on his total income of what, 15%, 10%, 12% would be another 257 each month. This leaves Person 1 with less than half of their total income per month, just about 825 dollars. Notice I did not include any costs for spouse, children, clothing, student loan payments, health insurance costs, car payments, car insurance, or savings. Let alone spending money for normal consumer expenditures like entertainment, Christmas shopping, Friday night movies, Monday night football with the guys, getting your nails or hair done with the girls.

Person 2 earns 250,000 a year. Person 2 spends 2250 for a studio apartment in lower Manhattan, however, still probably only spends 200 dollars on food, 200 for utility bills, 100 for the subway pass, apply that same flat income tax (averaged at 12.33%) and he will pay a much greater amount of 2568. This still leaves Person 2 with 15515.33 left over for the month. Again I am not factoring in any peripheral expenses.

So clearly, the 12.33% flat income tax has a much greater impact on Person 1 than Person 2. I think that is discriminatory.

Furthermore, since Person 2 has a greater disposable income, it is likely that Person 2 has a greater ability to use that income to make investments. These investments, if safe, are likely to bring a return. So on top of Person 2′s earned income of 250k you can assume that there are additional incomes collected. Are these additional incomes not earnings that would be taxed as interest, dividends, rental property income, etc? If either Person 1 or Person 2 suddenly earned a windfall inheritance does that count as income to be taxed?

Isn’t it more fair to say that it is discriminatory against Person 1 to charge him the same flat tax as Person 2?cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5877161086513671185.post-84920235382568665592010-10-24T13:20:00.000-04:002010-10-24T13:20:59.896-04:00Oct 2427 down, X to go.

I have been experiencing the most terrifying recurring dream. The most terrifying aspect of this dream is that I am not totally sure if it actually a dream. I feel completely conscious, I am alert and aware of my surroundings, but I am physically paralyzed. What makes me think I am dreaming is I see this alarm clock next to my bed that keeps reading the same two times: 3:26AM and 4:12AM. I don't have an alarm clock, and this dream-state feels like it is hours long. I keep trying to wake up but my body will not move, and I hear these strange whispering sounds. This morning I woke up from what I know was a dream, but it had the same feeling as the recurring dream with one difference: I actually saw someone else in the dream. I still couldn't move my body and the clock read the same. This is ridiculous.cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5877161086513671185.post-57970505061427281362010-10-15T16:21:00.001-04:002010-10-15T16:21:15.875-04:00ChangesI no longer wish to live in a world of passwords and PIN numbers.cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5877161086513671185.post-81847985020615255752010-05-04T09:24:00.002-04:002010-05-04T09:24:27.887-04:00Four Dead In OhioToday is the 40th anniversary of the Kent State University killings. Look at these two:

I don't really know what to say about this. Does this come off as irrational to you as it does to me? You are standing in front of Dunkin Donuts asking for an option of vegan donuts. For one, if you are asking them to stop being cruel because they use factory egg farm eggs just say that. "Use fair trade, organic, and sustainable eggs!" is a more accurate tag line. If you just want vegan donuts but really don't care about the plight of the chicken in modern America, just go to the vegan donut shop.cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5877161086513671185.post-64466626578611220572010-03-17T03:00:00.000-04:002010-03-17T03:00:23.746-04:00st patricks daySorry that this is only the second post of 2010, I promise to improve on that. The past couple of weeks have been...shitty. I had several fantastic stories to share with everyone, but at the moment my main focus is just going to be saying that "I'm back."

Baseball season is just around the corner, winter is winding down nicely with some fabulous weather as of late, and pics of the day will be back in full force soon. I can't wait!

That will be it for now, and I thought I'd leave you with some food for thought:
I do not think that I am a particularly bitter person yet I also do not think I am one of the happiest people either. I like Christmas. I want to like the Christmas season that capitalism has produced...

But I hate it. I hate everything about Christmas in America. From Halloween (if not earlier) until literally December 26 I am always pretty angry and skeptical. Talk about the game "Why the Terrorists Hate Us", Christmas is a perfect example. I hate having to hear crappy Holiday music on every radio station and ever store I walk into. Do the Backstreet Boys really need the money they get from their Christmas album being aired every year? I think the country...nay, the world, would be a better place without that crap.

I almost wish that America just stopped celebrating Christmas. If you think about it the only reason it is a national phenomenon is because it drives the 4th quarter revenue of the retail and finance industries. America just celebrates Christmas so the poor people know about all of the cool presents that they CAN'T afford yet spend every muscle and ounce of their existence working to at least afford some of it while putting the rest on their 30% interest credit cards (or if they are REALLY lucky they will get one of the pay day loans for a mere 1799% APR).

If America needs a holiday to just use to suck the life and money out of its citizenry, why not take a closer look at Thanksgiving? We have to be thankful that we get to spend so much money on meaningless stuff!

Eh what the fuck am I complaining about.

cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5877161086513671185.post-5281306132916219002009-12-17T22:43:00.002-05:002009-12-17T23:43:01.735-05:00Why Not Now?Phil asked me today "So when will your blog be cool again?". This made me realize two things: 1.) Someone actually thought my blog was cool (good thing HE does), and 2.) I might as well get back to this blog thing.

Recently at work there was a gentleman who had a detailed conversation with me about his life. He is the man who invented the cell phone, cable T.V., has CIA death squads chasing after him and his bride-to-be/prostitute friend, and knows that McDonalds is just a front for the CIA's top-secret detainment/torture program. Also, his bus pass expired.

I am sure that every one of you readers out there have some type of experience dealing with "that guy." It isn't really a problem, I sort of just went along with his stories because he was so excited to tell me all of this. Ah, I forgot to mention that if it weren't for Ron Howard and Barbara Streisand he would have made 12.5 trillion dollars...just because.

Another person who has been around the job keeps insisting that he...pretty much invented steel. He tells me (very often in fact, as if he never told me or even met me before) that he is the rightful President and CEO of U.S. Steel. He invented truck frames, I beams, and rail road tracks. He also goes by "Clark Kent" and "Rocky Bullwinkle." I don't think he knows that it is Rocky AND Bullwinkle, but heck no one is perfect.

These kind of people are nice enough and overall they are harmless. I often enjoy engaging them because I think that they really need to get that stuff off their chests. I believe that as the victim, I have that right for the state to seek the justice that I deem appropriate. Not my mother or father, or brothers or sister, just me. Hopefully I never get whacked, and this never matters in the future. You aren't going to read about the death penalty here but still I feel what happened yesterday is pretty relevant.

What does matter is the case heard before the Supreme Court yesterday, asking whether or not it is constitutional to send minors to prison for life with out parole for non-homicide crimes. (Luckily for our civilization, in Roper v Simmons, the 2005 the Supreme Court ruling that struck down the death penalty for people committing capital offenses under the aged of 18.) The lawyers for the two defendants, who were 16 and 13 at the time they committed their crimes argued that "The sentence is unequivocal and cruel because it rejects any hope that the adolescent can change"

Now I have not read the full arguments but I do not believe that the attorneys are arguing that their clients deserved to be released at any certain age, and this sits pretty well with me. What doesn't sit well with me is this:

"There are 111 inmates serving sentences of life without parole who
committed their nonhomicide crimes when they were younger than
18, of which 77 are in Florida prisons. There are 73 13- or 14-year-old
inmates serving such sentences"

However it begs the question of how do you rehabilitate a 13 year old kid who's made a couple of mistakes by throwing him in prison to hang out with other criminals? Does it matter if people are sentenced to life in prison at the age of 13, or spend their entire life in and out of the correctional system because, lets face it, with out present system, "corrections" is a complete misnomer.

I really do think that most children who are in a spot and hang out with the wrong crowd and get caught up in criminal activities can be completely rehabilitated and become productive and upstanding members of society. I also think that no one in the corrections system really cares. Life with out parole or any other sentence will probably mean the same thing the way the system works right now. We need to fix the system to have any hope of rehabilitating any criminals.

cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5877161086513671185.post-72668194957176312262009-11-05T18:35:00.003-05:002009-11-05T18:37:20.679-05:00New POD!
Need I say more?

cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5877161086513671185.post-75564118315648759392009-10-26T20:14:00.002-04:002009-10-27T00:19:23.964-04:00And.....We're Back!Wow, what a hiatus that was. I don't know but there was just something going on and I couldn't bring myself to blog. How unusual, especially for those who know me well, ME not having anything to say? No way, Jose'.

So first things first. The Yankees won their 40th Pennant last night. It was so fitting it seems to have Mo getting the 6 out save with a monster strike out. I am happy that it was a spectacular series played between the Angels and the Yanks. I knew we would be triumphant, but the Angles are pretty much Yankee killers. Now we face off against the Phillies, the No. 1 and No. 2 most powerful offenses in the game. I'd like to see Joba and Hughes come out of their mini-slumps, and I would also like to never see Demaso Marte ever again. I love the entire core of this team, and I know that after we win Number 27 the 2009 New York Yankees will be one of the greatest teams ever assembled.

I have definitely fallen behind with the Day Zero Project. Although the list is not as slight as I have updated, I do need to speed up to stay on pace and accomplish my goals. It is a lot harder now that I am about 5 months into the project (out of 33, or 1001 days from May 15, 2009).

Right, I nearly forgot. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you and that I love all of my friends and family out there who wished me a happy birthday. I didn't really do anything special (the newly traditional family-goes-out-for-dinner was great though, my first time eating at Mad Mex). I know all it takes today is a quick click on the key board and the birthday wishes are done, but still, I do appreciate all of my friend out there. It is good to hear from you and to know that you all are live and well.

Jared has been riding my butt about getting a post up, but I don't think he understands the fact that I was just totally wordless. Complete constipation of thought.

Well, I'm back. (Let's hope)

Oh yeah, and for you Canadian Bank customers, nothing happened with your account, its just me again.

Cheers.

cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5877161086513671185.post-9633188897422150662009-10-14T14:58:00.002-04:002009-10-14T15:06:59.027-04:00What is happening to me?I have bloggers block! There is something going on and I can't seem to muster up anything interesting or fun to talk about. Not that anything I write here is interesting or fun anyway. But for some reason NOTHING is coming to me! I will get a Yankees update soon, before the game Friday. And hopefully by then I will have some other great stuff to publish to the entire world, especially those Canadians who think this is their bank.

cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5877161086513671185.post-49672647338648834382009-10-08T15:37:00.002-04:002009-10-08T15:37:48.887-04:00Check out the Video...Amazing people doing amazing things

cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953768872012156345noreply@blogger.com0
